Researched ownership and repair-planning guidance for 2005–2009 LR3 and Discovery 3 vehicles. This article is not a workshop installation procedure or a confirmed owner repair outcome.

## At a glance

Choose a diagnostic tool by its documented coverage for your exact vehicle and the jobs you need. Check hardware generation, licensing, and official instructions before buying, borrowing, or using a tool.

## Write down the job

Reading a warning code, performing a service routine, and changing vehicle configuration are different tasks. Make a list of the functions you need and check the manufacturer’s coverage for your exact vehicle.

## Check licensing before sharing

GAP says the IIDTool BT includes one VIN license, and advanced programming functions are VIN-locked. Do not assume a used or borrowed tool will perform every function on your truck. Confirm current licensing and transfer terms with the manufacturer.

## Read the official instructions

Check hardware generation, manuals, update arrangements, and supported functions before purchase. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using the tool; a scanner does not replace a diagnosis.

## Record what you learn

Save scan reports and notes alongside the work in My Garage. Clear evidence is more useful to a specialist or fellow owner than a paraphrased warning message.
